How Much Water Do You Actually Need? (It Isn't Eight Glasses)
The most repeated hydration advice in the world has no clear scientific origin. Here's what the research says, and the one thing worth checking.
The "eight glasses a day" rule is one of the most durable pieces of health advice ever produced, and nobody can reliably say where it came from. The most likely origin is a 1945 recommendation suggesting around 2.5 litres a day for an adult — followed immediately by a sentence, universally ignored ever since, noting that most of that quantity is already present in food.
The actual guidance
Health authorities generally suggest a total water intake — from all sources — of roughly 2.7 litres a day for women and 3.7 litres for men. Around 20% of that typically comes from food. That leaves something in the region of 1.6 to 3 litres of fluid to drink, and it varies enormously depending on your size, your activity, the heat and what you ate.
Which is a long way of saying: there is no universal number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing.
What counts
Almost everything, which surprises people:
- Tea and coffee count. The diuretic effect of caffeine at normal intakes is mild and does not put you in net fluid deficit. Your morning coffee hydrates you.
- Food counts. Soup, fruit, yoghurt, vegetables. Cucumber and watermelon are over 90% water.
- Milk counts, and hydrates about as well as water.
- Alcohol does not. It is a genuine diuretic and works against you.
When you genuinely need more
- Hot weather, or a heated indoor environment.
- Exercise — roughly 400–800 ml per hour of sustained activity, more in heat.
- Illness with fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Higher altitude.
- A high-fibre diet, which needs fluid to work properly.
- GLP-1 medications, which blunt thirst signalling.
The electrolyte question
The electrolyte-sachet industry has done very well out of convincing ordinary people that plain water is somehow insufficient. For most people, on most days, it is entirely sufficient. Electrolytes become genuinely relevant with sustained exercise beyond roughly an hour, heavy sweating, illness with fluid loss, or very hot conditions. Outside those, you are buying flavoured salt.
You can drink too much
It is rare, but real. Drinking a very large volume of plain water in a short period can dilute blood sodium — hyponatraemia — which is dangerous and has killed endurance athletes and participants in water-drinking challenges. The advice is not to force water down against thirst. Thirst is, for the overwhelming majority of healthy adults, an excellent guide.
